                Application of titanium metal in petrochemical industry

 

Titanium heat exchangers, condensers and related auxiliary equipment have been successfully used in petrochemical enterprises for more than 20 years. The most commonly used industrial pure titanium in titanium (the most widely used TA2), Ti-6Al-4V (when a certain strength is required) and Ti-0.8Ni-0.3Mo (in the presence of a gap or in a non-oxidizing medium). Low hydrogen (<0.05%) titanium is required when hydrogen absorption and hydrogen embrittlement may occur, especially in the case of weld corrosion and hydrogen absorption. There are many products in the petrochemical industry, and the process is complicated. Now the example introduces the application of titanium:

 

(1) Titanium equipment is ideal for refining crude oils containing high sulfur and salt. In foreign countries, titanium equipment has been successfully used in many processes such as atmospheric distillation unit, sewage treatment equipment, condenser of desulfurization separation tower and radiator of stripper. China has also adopted a titanium-titanium water pump in the system, a titanium condenser in catalytic cracking fractionation, a cryogenic separation titanium condenser and a porous titanium plate, etc., which have been operating normally for more than ten years.

(2) Chlorinated hydrocarbons are one of the largest varieties of petrochemicals. Stainless steel equipment is difficult to handle due to the chlorination reaction. Foreign countries have used titanium to produce dichloromethane rectification towers, trichloroethane heat exchangers, condensation towers and fractionation towers, trichloroethylene condensation towers, perchloroethylene heat exchangers and polychlorinated coil heaters. In the production of vinyl chloride in China, the tray support frame, the connecting pipe and the flange sealing surface of the cooling tower, waste water stripper and waste water storage tank are Ti-0.2Pd lining, which has not been used for nearly ten years. Titanium pipes, joints and gas distributors have been made of titanium for many years.

(3) Phenol is an important raw material for petrochemical industry. It is a new process to obtain phenol and acetone from cumene and cumene peroxide by using propylene and benzene in petroleum refining. Foreign countries have used titanium equipment more than ten years ago, and this technology is still under development in China. The old process uses benzene sulfonate solution to produce phenol. China has adopted a titanium neutralization reactor, a titanium coil cooler and an ion nitride titanium agitator bushing, and the effect is very good.

(4) In the apparatus for oxidizing ethylene to acetaldehyde, oxidizing acetaldehyde to acetic acid and propylene to synthesize acetone, the main corrosive medium is a catalyst except for the corrosion of raw materials and products. The stainless steel is very corroded in it, only titanium Has good corrosion resistance. As early as 1963, the United States succeeded in the application of titanium in the production of ethylene oxide to acetaldehyde. China's first ethylene oxide acetaldehyde plant was put into use in 1976, and the operation of titanium equipment has been good so far. The foreign titanium-lined reactor is up to 9.6m and has a diameter of 3m. There are also 11 titanium equipments such as heat exchanger, catalyst regeneration tower and acetaldehyde solution cooler. After the 1980s, both Shanghai and Jilin introduced foreign equipments for the oxidation of ethylene to acetaldehyde, many of which were made of titanium. They have obvious advantages over stainless steel and are very satisfactory. The design of propylene oxidation to acetone, 12 sets of titanium equipment, a factory with an annual output of 30,000 tons of acetone, titanium equipment up to 40t.

(5) Acetaldehyde oxidation to acetic acid is a general process in China. Titanium has been used as a high-boiling reboiler, a first-grade acetic acid column reboiler and a condensing cooler. Titanium equipment has been used in distillation towers, fractionation towers and distillation towers abroad. Especially in the oxidation of lower alkane to acetic acid, the by-products are more, the formic acid content is up to 8%, and the corrosion is extremely strong. At this time, titanium is used instead of stainless steel, and the effect is very satisfactory.

(6) Terephthalic acid is a raw material for synthesizing polyester, which is industrially prepared by a p-xylene oxidation method. High temperature oxidation of acetic acid and bromide exists in both high temperature oxidation and low temperature oxidation. In medium with temperature higher than 135 °C, 316L stainless steel pitting occurs after several tens of hours. Therefore, the design specification stipulates that titanium must be used above 135 °C. The use of titanium is very effective and has a bright future.

(7) Urea is a high-quality chemical fertilizer and a raw material for petrochemical industry. Since the first titanium-titanium-synthesizing tower was put into production in 1963, nearly 10,000 units have been operated all over the world. The practice shows that there is no obvious corrosion of the titanium-lined synthesis tower. The conversion corrosion rate of 316L stainless steel is 4.1-4.5mm/a. Therefore, titanium has better economic benefits than stainless steel. In addition to the titanium-titanium-synthesizing tower, since the 1970s, the C02 stripper, heat exchanger, mixer and pump valve have been used.
